Past Surveys

Below are a few of the surveys which SBRC has been involved with, and which you may have contributed to, in the past. Please remember that we still want your records for ALL species, including those listed on this page!

Mountain HareMountain Hare Survey 2008

Mountain Hares were first introduced into Shetland on the island of Vaila in 1900 and then to the Kergord Estate in 1907. Both populations flourished and the species began to spread.

In 2008 there was a national survey of Mountain Hares in Scotland and the Records Centre collated all Shetland records. Click here to see the results. We are sure that this map is incomplete so we are always keen to receive your records of the species. In Shetland, Mountain Hares are found on heather moorland in the mainland. They are easiest to see in Winter when their fur turns white.

Ringed Plover2007 Ringed Plover Survey

During 2007, the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) ran a UK-wide survey of breeding Little Ringed and Ringed Plovers, the first national survey for these species since 1984. In Shetland only Ringed Plovers were covered as Little Ringed Plover is only a rare visitor to the islands.

Shetland was covered extensively during this survey. Data from the survey are currently being analysed and it is hoped that a paper reporting the new population estimates for the two species will be published in 2009.
